25 Years Ago in MA:
October
1983

• The cover shows designer/author Leon Kincaid with his Scooter Two-Meter RC Sailplane, which has demonstrated its winning ways in competition. It won both the 1982 and 1983 AMA Nats Two-Meter Soaring events and is the subject of this month's feature RC construction article (plans set 422).

• This month's CL construction article features Anne's Plane (plans set 421). This simple yet effective design by Anne's father—Ron McNally—utilizes a 1/2A engine that gives it a surprising amount of maneuverability. The profile fuselage and flat wing make this design easy to build and fun to fly.

• Bill Warner presents this month's FF model: the Zippy Sport Peanut Scale. The little rubber-powered airplane has exceptional flight characteristics, which gives usual flight times of more than 11/2 minutes. Complete full-size plans are printed in the magazine.

• Effective July 5, 1983, your CB license is void. George M. Myers reports that the Federal Communications Commission has discontinued the licenses formerly required to fly on 27, 72, and 75 MHz channels. However, there has been no change in the Ham licenses required to fly on the 50.8 and 53 MHz channels.

• For the beginning electric-power modeler, Bob Kopski continues his "All About Electrics" articles with Part 2. In this installment, Bob deals with the heart of electrics: the motor.

• Brad Powers gives a 20-question multiple-choice test in his "Let's Talk about Airplane Design" article. The quiz is designed to determine how much you know about why an airplane behaves as it does.

• Bob Clemens reports on the U.S. Indoor Championships: a weeklong FF Indoor event at West Baden, Indiana. All forms of Indoor flying were contested.

• New products this month include K&S Engineering's Mini Wire Bender priced at $7.95, Roush Manufacturing's Cobra Jr. 1.3 cu. in. gasoline engine for $159.95, Airtronics' single-stick Championship Series 7 RC transmitter for AM and FM modulation in 72, 53, and 27 MHz frequencies, and Ace RC's coreless 35 inch-ounce Ultra Servo in kit form for $39.95 or assembled for $49.95.
