AMA - Bringing Modelers Together

Welcome to the education section of the Academy of Model Aeronautics' web site where the work of the Education Committee represents the "Academy" in our name. The first objective of our mission is to be a resource to help train newcomers - young and old - to the sport, hobby and educational opportunities of model aviation.

We wish to promote model aviation as an educational tool for use by AMA clubs as part of their outreach to local communities as well as assist members with activities and events for community groups, summer camps, and after-school programs. We have a number of activities that can be used in the Academy’s Takeoff And Grow (TAG) program to help our members successfully manage these and other events designed to serve the communities that are home to our flying sites.

To help us with this objective, we will feature successful activities of clubs from every AMA district, examples of programs that have helped members reach out to a broader audience in their communities. By providing a forum for an exchange of new ideas, we are confident that AMA members will have more tools to increase membership as well as greater enjoyment of model aviation.

A second objective in the Education Committee’s mission is to assist classroom teachers who wish to integrate aerospace education concepts into math, science, social studies, language arts and technology education programs to meet goals and objectives of the national education standards for these disciplines.

Curriculum support and materials for middle school physical science and math programs may be found by contacting us for a copy of AeroLab, a DVD/CD featuring activities developed by science teachers for teachers, thanks to the generous support of the Alcoa Foundation. AeroLab lessons feature simple foam and balsa aircraft as tools to teach the concepts of force and motion, potential/kinetic energy and centripetal force. The activities also allow students to practice important math skills to determine average speed and distance flown.

Support for informal after-school programs such as Science Olympiad or the National Free Flight Society's National Model Aviation Program, (NMAP) may be found in links. If you are a teacher or a community group leader seeking mentor assistance with any of these initiatives, you may find the details about how to locate one in your area in the modeling educator listing, or requesting assistance from a local AMA club in your area by using the Academy’s Club Locator.
